On Saturday, March 7, KLM hosted 60 sick and disabled children along with their companions for a special day in partnership with the Hoogvliegers Foundation. The highlight of the event was a sightseeing flight over the Netherlands aboard an Embraer 195-E2, one of KLM's newest and most fuel-efficient aircraft, operated by KLM Cityhopper.
The children received a warm welcome at Schiphol Airport at 11:30 a.m. from numerous KLM employees who volunteered to make the day memorable. After the reception, the children proceeded through customs to gate B35, where they met KLM pilots, cabin crew, and ambassadors from the Hoogvliegers Foundation, including astronaut André Kuipers and radio DJs Coen Swijnenberg and Wouter van der Goes.
At 2 p.m., the special flight took off, soaring over locations such as Zeeland and the Efteling theme park. A team of KLM staff and medical personnel were on board to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Upon returning, the children had the chance to explore the cockpit and ask questions to the pilots, flight attendants, Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, and Customs officers.
Captain Joren Leunge remarked, “Many of these children have faced significant challenges due to their medical conditions. Every smile today was invaluable. It’s truly special for us to help these children forget their illnesses for a while and experience what it’s like to be part of our crew for a day.”
KLM has been dedicated to supporting vulnerable children for over 25 years, collaborating with organizations like the Hoogvliegers Foundation, Wings of Support, and Make-A-Wish. Many KLM employees volunteer for these initiatives, and passengers can also contribute by donating miles through Flying Blue to charities focused on helping children in need.
The Hoogvliegers Foundation provides children aged 6 to 17 who are ill or disabled with the opportunity to be a 'pilot' for a day, arranging flights from various airports across the Netherlands each year. Since its establishment, over 14,000 children have enjoyed this experience, and KLM has been closely associated with the foundation since 2008.
