The Subsonic Flight Demonstrator (SFD) project aims to collaborate with industry and other government entities to identify, select, and develop essential airframe technologies, including innovative wing designs, that are likely to transition to the next generation of single-aisle airliners.

Transitioning technologies from research to production can be challenging for manufacturers, and many promising innovations may not be adopted due to various technical and economic risks.

NASA, in collaboration with industry partners, plans to:

  • Develop and flight test an advanced airframe configuration and associated technologies to significantly reduce aircraft fuel consumption.
  • Collect ground data that NASA and industry teams will use to validate the advantages of the new technologies.
  • Leverage research findings to assist the industry in making decisions regarding the next generation of single-aisle airliners.
